The South African Young Wine Show is presented annually by the South African National Wine Show Association (SANWSA). This gives winemakers the wonderful opportunity to showcase their best wines of the current vintage.
The eight participating wine regions are Robertson, Worcester/Breedekloof, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Oranje-Vaal, Olifants River, Swartland and Little Karoo.
Champions are crowned in the following 17 categories: Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Sémillon, Other White Cultivar, Dry White Blend, Sweetish Wine, Noble Late Harvest, Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Other Red Cultivar, Dry Red Blend, Port, Dessert Wine and Muscadel.
In addition to the 17 SA championship trophies, the impressive General Smuts Trophy – introduced in 1952 – for the overall SA Champion Young Wine, and the Pietman Hugo Trophy, for the cellar with the highest score for five best entries, are also at stake.
The 2019 the regionals was held at Eagle’s Cliffs newly launched wedding/functions hall out in the beautiful Scherpenheuvel valley, 20 kilometers from the town of Worcester.
The 2019 Worcester/Breedekloof regional show brought along with it a grand total 354 entries, where 14 wine cellars took part. From all entries received, our regional show received 2 gold awards, 153 award silver and 102 received bronze.
In addition, our region received a grand total of 54 class winners, which are all selected from our gold and silver award winners. The class winners are exemplary wines in their categories, and these class winners are then considered for the various regional trophies. Only the Grand Champion (Alice Malan) trophy is selected from the gold award winners.
